cyprus.jpgCyprus, a brief introduction

Cyprus is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and is approximately four and half hours flight time from the UK and northern Europe.

Cyprus today offers a diverse mix of culture and tradition spanning nearly 10,000 years of history together with all the benefits of modern society but in an atmosphere of pure relaxation.

Until recently Cyprus was possibly one of the Mediterranean’s best kept secrets with only a few having discovered all that this magical place has to offer, yet despite Cyprus having grown in popularity as a tourist and retirement destination the island has retained it’s character and now boasts a sound and affordable economy with a climate that offers sunshine on 360 days every year.

The division of Cyprus caused by the occupation of the North of the Island in 1974 continues to be negotiated within the political forum and whilst a settlement still seems a long way off there is little or no impact upon those who visit or make their home in the south. Movement across the border for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots has been relaxed thereby reducing tensions. It seems highly unlikely that the problems of the early 70s could ever be repeated given that now more than ever the political will appears to exist to find a solution to the situation.

The attraction of Cyprus lies not just in it’s warm and hospitable people, although that on it’s own would be enough, cyprus1.jpgbut also in the easy pace of life, stunning countryside and beaches, excellent shopping, superb recreational facilities including championship golf courses, water parks, every form of restaurant and cuisine besides traditional Cyprus cooking and everything needed to make living in or visiting on a regular basis a truly enjoyable experience where every day offers new opportunities to explore, relax and meet like minded people. Crime and all the other negative aspects of modern life in other countries has largely passed Cyprus by so you can feel secure in the knowledge that this is a gentle peaceful place where you can relax.

Since joining the EU in 2004 travel and staying has never been easier with citizens of other member states being privileged to the same level of service and facilities they find at home. Healthcare is just one example where those who retire here enjoy the benefits of an excellent health service both state and private where because English is spoken widely if one is unwell communication is not a problem.

village_life.jpgIt is worth remembering however that although many Cypriots speak English the language of Cyprus is of course Greek and so the local people are always delighted and appreciative if one makes the effort to speak even a little Greek.

As a full member of the EU Cyprus will gradually adopt many of the positive aspects that membership brings but thankfully will retain it’s culture, relaxed society and warmth of hospitality making Cyprus a real alternative to some of the more traditional retirement and second home locations in the Mediterranean. The best way to truly experience Cyprus is to visit this magical island and fall in love with all it has to offer. Remember this is where Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love emerged from the sea to make her home, clearly she knew something that you too can discover
